Amazingly, any doctor can call themselves a plastic surgeon! A medical license does not include a specialty. Board-Certified plastic surgeons must be trained to do much more than cosmetic surgery. In the hospital they are often the "cavalry", called by other surgeons to reconstruct problem areas. To be eligible for board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a doctor must first train as a surgeon after graduating from an accredited medical school. Only after this pre-requisite training can they be accepted to a two or three year accredited plastic surgery program. Some go on to additional fellowship training. This process usually takes 7-9 years after medical school.
To be board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, a surgeon must complete an approved residency of at least five years after medical school. That surgeon must then wait a minimum of two years before sitting for extensive written and oral exams. After passsing the written exams, the board actually reviews all of the cases done over a 12 month period. This step takes extensive preparation by the candidate, who is usually now 8 or 9 years out of medical school, and includes every aspect of the care and results. After completing board certification, a surgeon may then apply for review of his or her credentials, ethics and practice to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, (FACS). This process can take another two years.
Board certified plastic surgeons have truly "seen it all". Years of trauma and reconstructive surgery prepare them to be confident and comfortable in an operative setting. There is no substitute for training and experience. That is why choosing a board certified plastic surgeon for your cosmetic procedure is an important first step. Many senior plastic surgeons will choose to limit their practices to cosmetic surgery only. This exclusivity focuses their experience to help you get the best possible result!
